Panch Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri
One of the most
striking buildings in Fatehpur Sikri's palace complex is the Panch
Mahal (Five-Storeyed Palace). Akbar's queens and female attendants
would enjoyed a protected view over the pool and pachisi court
(although missing now, the five levels would have had privacy
screening).
The local guide said that the number of columns and levels had great
significance for Hindus, but he pointed out so many different
religious connections that I lost track of them.
The pool in front of the Panch Mahal is called the Anoop Talao. It
would have been filled with water, save for the bridge, and it would
have been the setting for musical concerts and other entertainment.
